The 46th Colne Smack and Barge Match was sailed from Brightlingsea on September 2 in a very light southerly breeze over a shortened course in the River Colne.
In the Victorian era, a smack was a decked gaff rigged fishing boat so that Essex smacks and bawleys race together in the Smack Class.
The eleven entries in the Smack Class drifted down on the ebb tide over the starting line. The smack Maria won the ‘Cock of the Colne’ and masthead Cock flag for the first Essex smack and the Leigh bawley Gladys won the Bawley Trophy.
The Edme had run back followed by Niagara, Marjorie, Reminder, Repertor and Thalatta.
