The 20-year Master Plan for boosting trade through the Kent port of Sheerness has reached a significant milestone with the completion of the first round of the multimillion pound investment.
Since early last year, the port’s owners, Peel Ports, has invested a total of £27mn in its Wellmarsh site as part of the plan to strengthen the port as a leading terminal for the bulk timber and the automotive sectors.
The ongoing development includes converting the former Thamesteel site into flexible storage and logistics facilities, including 23 acres of car storage for the port’s automotive clients.
A further 25 acres of timber storage facilities have been constructed. The port has the largest terminal of its kind in the UK handling 1.3mn tons of timber and forest products a year. The custom-built facility includes covered and open storage capacity.
