The marketing divisions of the various cruise lines, often, and successfully, theme specific cruises with the objective of attracting cruise passengers from a particular interest group to their vessels.
Ranging from Classical Music Cruises through to Golfing Cruises this approach is growing in popularity as the ingenuity of the marketing teams become even more creative.
Prime example of their skills was a recent cruise of the Azamara Quest during the summer of this year. The cruise in question was themed by Azamara Club Cruises as “Captain Carl’s Homecoming Cruise”. Captain Carl is Carl Smith who was born in the Isle of Man and lived in Peel before beginning his career at sea. He is the only Manxman who is currently the Master of a modern cruise vessel. The call to the Isle of Man featured a number of shore excursions some of which were in part accompanied by the Captain as he introduced the passengers to his former home.
In keeping with the nautical theme, Carl and some of his crew members also took part in the World Tin Bath Championships as well as the Snake Race, both popular events that take place annually in Castletown’s picturesque harbour. They were cheered on by a party of passengers from the cruise ship who travelled to Castletown on a specially chartered vintage steam train from Douglas where the Azamara Quest was at anchor.
‘That evening passengers onboard were treated to a dinner that featured fine Manx fare including Lamb, Queenies, award winning cheeses , special breads and not to forget the famous Manx Icecream. They were also able to enjoy a variety of Manx beers .... a veritable ‘final night of the cruise’ feast prior to disembarkation in Dublin the following day.
From postings on social media sites after the event it was a highly successful call .... and voyage for the passengers, cruise line and the destination !
