Makarov University

The Japanese shipping company Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Russian university on co-operation on the development of the Northern Sea Route and of its cadetship training programme.

MOL said the agreement was signed in St Petersburg in June with the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping (Makarov University) and it further develops the training of MOL seafarers especially in the field of Northern Sea Route operations.

The Japanese line has been operating icebreaking LNG carriers for the Yamal LNG project on the Northern Sea Route and MOL crews have had special training, such as polar water courses for navigating officers and cold climate survival courses at the Makarov Training Centre, part of the university.

MOL said this centre is one of the world’s leading training establishments in polar waters and ice navigation simulator training approved by the Japanese classification society Class NK and accredited by the Russian Federation.
