I am enclosing a photo of my first ship to sea in 1960 as junior engineer.
I joined the MV Hartington on 6 Jan 1960 for a three-month trip to West Africa. Seventeen months later, I arrived back to my home-port, Newcastle – River Tyne.
We did get to West Africa then back to Holland with logs, then off to see the world, Japan – Australia, USA – Japan, India then home. I was home for three weeks then back to the Hartington for second trip back to Japan then to Hong Kong where the ship was sold to the Chinese.
The steering gear on MV Hartington was manufactured by Donkin and Co. My next ship was MV Temple Main as 4th engineer. Happy days.
